Tuesday night: the house is dark,
and the mail’s addressed “to owner.”
Dinner date with Rachael Ray,
but I still feel like a loner.
Step outside to grab a breath of air.
Neighbor kids are playing over there.
Rained last night; the swail is high,
and the kids are down there splashin’,
racin’ leaves past rocky coves
that the stream left grown-ups’ trash in.
Someone’s mom calls out, “I’ll count to ten—
don’t you make me tell you once again!”
And so they
run down the street in their cold, wet sneakers,
laughing at the trouble they know they’re in…
stay out late ‘til the street light flickers on.
Then they say good-night, and I’ll see ya tomorrow,
certain as the dawn,
when they’ll start the day
and pull those sneakers on.
Kids are gone—I’m on my own,
but the stream is still there flowin’.
Now I feel my brow relax,
and I find my smile is growin’.
Age is just a number after all.
And so I thought you might like if I gave you a call.
Now let’s go
run down the street in our cold, wet sneakers,
laughing at the trouble we know we’re in…
stay out late ‘til the street light flickers on.
Then we’ll say good-night. Gotta work tomorrow,
on the road by dawn,
but when we get home,
we’ll pull those sneakers on.
So forget the rules. It’s fine to have some fun.
Once the bills are paid, we can take the time to run
in our cold, wet sneakers,
laughing at the trouble we know we’re in…
stay out late ‘til the street light flickers on.
Then we’ll say good-night. Gotta work tomorrow,
on the road by dawn,
but when we get home,
we’ll pull those sneakers on—
those cold, wet sneakers,
laughing at the trouble we know we’re in…
stay out late ‘til the street light flickers on.
Then we’ll say good-night. Gotta work tomorrow,
on the road by dawn,
but we’ll find the time
to pull those sneakers—
make the time
to pull those sneakers on.
