Make It

Found myself on a street in a city.
Didn’t know where I was, where to go.
Wanting grace, needing hope, craving pity,
as the wind began to blow.
Took a step, just to say I was moving.
Pulled my coat tighter up to my chin.
Was afraid they would think I was losing
what I thought I had to win.
So I tried to make it on my own,
told myself a need was just a weakness,
made myself an island in my cold, stormy sea of existence.
Many steps, many years I had traveled.
Many prayers I had tried not to pray.
Every web that I wove came unraveled
‘til I found the strength to say:
I don’t have to make it on my own.
I can let a stranger walk beside me,
learning as we walk this road that need is a gift of existence.
Now the streets are still cold, and the storm is no kinder,
but in faces of strangers I see something new:
it’s the fear that I long ago saw in the mirror.
There’s a secret I found that can help you pull through:
We don’t have to make it on our own.
We who once were strangers, now companions.
Walk with me along this road, ‘cause that is the joy of existence.
We don’t have to make it on our own.
When the storm is howling all around us,
We can stand together side by side in the strength
that we find in the truth of existence:
We don’t have to make it on our own.
